KCRW 89.9 FM is a public radio station based at Santa Monica College and serving the Los Angeles area. Its main channel combines NPR news, Southern California reporting, cultural programs, and hand-picked music rather than following a single commercial format. The weekday lineup moves from Morning Edition into Morning Becomes Eclectic, Press Play, and afternoon news.
KCRW began broadcasting in 1947 as a training project for returning World War II veterans. The station later developed into NPR’s flagship member in Southern California. Its best-known music program, Morning Becomes Eclectic, has made music discovery part of the station’s identity since 1977.
The primary signal is 89.9 FM in Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Full-power companion stations extend the service to Ventura County, the Coachella Valley, and the Mojave area. KCRW also maintains separate Eclectic24 and News24 online channels, while its official playlist archive helps listeners identify music heard on the main service.
