650 AM WSM is Nashville’s heritage country radio station and the radio home of the Grand Ole Opry. Its lineup connects classic and current country with bluegrass, Americana, artist interviews, live performances, specialty shows, and the voices and stories of Music City.
The regular weekday WSM schedule includes Late Nights with Lexi, WSM’s Bluegrass Breakfast, The Kelly Sutton Show, WSM at Work, On Air With Eryn, and WSM at Night. Saturday builds toward the station’s signature broadcast with WSM Weekends, The Crook & Chase Countdown, Y’all Access, and the Opry Warm-Up Show before the Grand Ole Opry live broadcast. Sunday ranges from WSM Classics and gospel to Pure American Country, The Fringe, WSM Artists’ Corner, The Jason Coleman Show, and Into the Blue.
WSM first signed on October 5, 1925. Less than two months later, on November 28, the program that became the Grand Ole Opry began on the station. WSM moved to 650 kHz in 1928 and activated its 50,000-watt transmitter in 1932, helping country music and Nashville performers reach listeners far beyond Middle Tennessee.
The call letters WSM came from the National Life and Accident Insurance Company motto “We Shield Millions.” The station’s diamond-shaped Blaw-Knox tower south of Nashville remains one of American broadcasting’s most recognizable landmarks, while WSM’s country programming and Opry connection have made the station an enduring part of the genre’s history.
